Style A Coffee Table Like A Pro

Living room with cozy couches and a large square coffee table in the middle with decor

Don’t be an empty coffee table victim!

A coffee table is more than just a surface for drinks—it’s a stage for your personal style and a key design element that can elevate an entire room. Often the centerpiece of a living, family, or media room, your coffee table deserves thoughtful attention—not just for practicality but for aesthetics too.

That said, clutter is not the solution. A coffee table shouldn’t be a catch-all for remote controls, mail, or other distractions. Instead, the goal is to strike a balance between style and function, making it an inviting focal point.

Here’s how to effortlessly transform your coffee table into a show-stopper

1 – Play with Scale

Incorporate objects of varying sizes and heights to create visual interest. Start with a large item, like a vase filled with branches, to anchor your design. Layer in smaller items to create a balanced, dynamic look.

2- Use Books Creatively

They are called ‘coffee table books’ for a reason! I select books that align with a room’s color palette and reflect your interests, such as travel, art, or design. Stack them thoughtfully—typically one to three books high—with the largest book on the bottom. For an added touch, showcase an open page featuring a favorite photo or illustration.

3 – Incorporate Sculptural Elements

Add dimension with sculptural pieces like candle holders, bowls, vases, or unique objects with interesting shapes or textures. Choose items that hold personal meaning, such as artisan-crafted souvenirs or keepsakes from loved ones. These can double as conversation starters.

4 – Play with Contrast

Introduce a mix of colors and textures to make your table pop. For example, pair a dark wood table with glass or warm, tactile elements. Let a few standout items draw the eye, while others provide subtle support. The key is balance—avoid having all pieces compete for attention.

5 – Anchor with a Tray

These are my favorite! It helps organize smaller items, like candles or decorative accents, while providing a sense of order. A sleek tray can even hold a remote (like my tiny Samsung Frame remote!), blending beauty with function.

6 – Add Flowers or Plants

I believe there is nothing better than living plants in a home. They bring life to your coffee table! A vase of fresh flowers, and branches, or a small houseplant can add a pop of natural color. For a low-maintenance option, try succulents or air plants in a decorative bowl.

7 – Leave Room for Functional

Keep about 60% of the table surface free for practical use, such as holding coffee cups, snack plates, laptops, or even propped-up feet. A well-placed tray can be moved easily when more space is needed.

8 – Refresh with the Seasons

Keep your decor dynamic by updating it seasonally or whenever the mood strikes. This small change can make your space feel fresh and welcoming.

By blending beauty and function, your coffee table can become the centerpiece of your room—a reflection of your style that also invites a welcoming atmosphere.
