Fall seems to arrive in a rush – chilly mornings, vibrant leaves, and the unmistakable scent of pumpkin spice everywhere. With both of my kids starting school for the first time, it feels like I’m entering a new phase of life. And with these changes, my home begins to transform, too.
I love to bring out my fall décor—candles, pillow covers in warm autumn tones, cozy throw blankets, and wreaths. There’s something about this time of year that makes it feel instinctual to create a snug, tidy space. We want our homes to be a refuge from chilly days and dark evenings. Here are some of my favorite ways to bring fall into your home:
Add Texture
A bit of texture can go a long way. Rich fabrics, like velvet throw pillows, add warmth and comfort to a room. Mustard and plum tones are perfect for fall and a great way to incorporate the season without overwhelming the space with bright orange hues. Choose pieces with bold prints or textured fabrics to create a cozy atmosphere that feels seasonally appropriate.
Bring in Seasonal Scents
Fall is the perfect time to pull out those autumn-scented candles. I like to keep it simple—just a few candles throughout the house with subtle fragrances like mulled cider or spiced pecans can transform the atmosphere. This is also the season to embrace homemade comforts: apple sauce, apple pie, or apple cinnamon pancakes. In our home, apples and cinnamon are staples, and they make the whole house smell wonderful.
Incorporate Fall Foliage
Switch up the foliage in your vases to reflect the season. Mix in earthy tones—browns, soft golds, and greens—to create a balanced, natural look. A couple of years ago, I splurged on the most beautiful fall wreath from Williams Sonoma Home, and it’s become a staple piece of our fall décor. (Not pictured here.)
Spruce Up the Porch
Swap out the bright, summery flowers in your pots for something more subtle and earthy to welcome guests into your autumn sanctuary. My dried wheat wreath sets a warm tone right at the entryway, giving a hint of the coziness inside.
Every year, I cherish embracing fall in our home. There’s something magical about watching nature paint the leaves in reds, burnt oranges, yellows, and greens. I hope you take a moment to soak in the beauty of the season—each one seems to pass by faster than the last.
