Starting a Kitchen Remodel: Essential Tips

Tackling a kitchen remodel can feel daunting. I get it! The kitchen is a central hub where we spend so much of our time, either cooking or conversing with those who are. With countless factors and customization options, choosing materials can be overwhelming. And that’s the fun part of the project. Don’t get me started on the potential snags with plumbing, electrical work, and more. With over a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve gathered some valuable tips to help you kick off your project on the right foot.

1. Design a New Floor Plan and Layout

This crucial step should happen before any demolition or purchases. Start by asking yourself “why?” Why are we remodeling, and what do we hope to achieve? Do we need more storage? More space? Additional seating? A complete makeover? Better lighting? Identifying your reasons will help you create a focused plan based on your wants and needs, guiding your decisions and keeping you on track despite the myriad distractions of colors, styles, and patterns.

2. Select Materials Thoughtfully

Randomly selecting materials and hoping they work together is a recipe for disaster. Start by creating a comprehensive list of all the materials and selections required for the project. This list might include flooring, cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, lighting, appliances, sinks, hardware, paint colors, and more.

3. Opt for Timeless or Classic Materials

Choosing materials that remain stylish and don’t quickly become outdated is a safe bet. When I think of timeless options, I envision marble or quartz, subway tiles, or even marble subway tiles. Natural wood is another excellent choice; in the PNW, we have a variety of beautiful woods that will look stunning for generations.

4. Avoid Common Mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes I see is the overuse of white. All white everywhere lacks contrast and texture, resulting in a sterile look. Consider incorporating elements like a butcher block, a wooden island, or wood floating shelves. These additions bring warmth, texture, and a cozy atmosphere to your kitchen.

5. Anticipate Challenges with Material Orders

One common issue is fitting appliances into their designated cabinet spaces. Appliances are often one of the last things installed but one of the first things selected since the kitchen is built around them. Sometimes factory measurements can be slightly off or misleading, causing fit issues. It’s a terrible feeling when things don’t fit, so double and triple-check measurements when the appliances arrive. I highly recommend having them delivered early enough to adjust your cabinet order if needed.
